The Sure Word for Today: God Gave Me a Sound Mind.
Reaching A Decision: Minimising Risk. — Part 1.
Slaves are now our rulers, and there is no one to set us free. We are in danger from brutal desert tribes; we must risk our lives just to bring in our crops. Our skin is scorched from fever and hunger end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Lamentation 5:8-10 (CEV)
Rule number one when reaching a decision never sacrifices the future for the short-term unless there is no option. Esau and Jacob were twins raised in the same house, same rules, same religion, same culture, same discipline, and yet they were different in their mindset. Esau wanted some food and decided to trade his birthright to get some lentil soup from Jacob because he thought he would die if he did not eat at the time. By selling his birthright, he lost everything.
The fact that Esau would sell his birthrights in exchange for ordinary soup indicates the disdain in which he held his tradition. He lacks knowledge of his position. In the words of the Bible, “Esau despised the birthright.” He has not only sinned against his culture; he sinned against God.
Genesis 25:34 “Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.”
Esau sacrificed his future for the short-term benefit. Jacob was indeed an investor. He never went hunting, yet he has the product of hunting in store. Esau never had savings; he laboured day in and out. He has no business of making his money work for him. Jacob had flocks of cattle’s, sheep and goats because he is an entrepreneur and not a craftsman like Esau. He sent his money to work for him, and that made him more prosperous than Esau. He read the stock market, he knew the futuristic value of the birthright, and Jacob bought it when there was a credit crunch in anticipation and preparation for a favourable future he can cash in and make a profit with the investment.
Esau was a thief. He completely neglected the fact he sold his birthright as he wanted the blessing, but God and the angels backed Jacob, who was at the time the rightful owner of the blessing. Esau misjudged the future and paid dearly for it. He never accepted his mistakes.
