The Five Stages of Conflict — Part 2.
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:19 (KJV).
The first stage of conflict is the latent stage. People are in conflict with each other, and they are not even aware that they are in some sort of war against each other. Factors that can become a potential conflict exist. They may have an underlying sense of being mistreated or wronged, thereby developing hidden resentments.
Competition is the activity or a state of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing dominance over others. Competition is more about supremacy. Competition, while is often seen as valuable, can intensify into destructive conflict. When those competing start sabotaging each other, it can lead to conflict. People who are competing may not be even aware they are at war as they think more about winning at all cost. Winning at all cost is not winning. It's capitulation.
Latent conflicts are not recognised by the participant because they are often unaware. People do not just wake up in the morning and plan to be in conflict. One thing leads to another that gradually or instantly results in conflict. At the latent stage, because the participants are not aware they are in conflict, they cannot identify the source of their anxiety or anguish. They feel strong impulses, like fear and hostility, and yet they are unable to understand why. It is challenging to understand latent conflict because it has not yet been expressed in a manifest behaviour that allows one to identify them.
Emotional awareness enables you to identify your feelings, so it becomes easy to control your emotions since you know they exist. The need to learn ways to increase your emotional awareness is essential. Emotional awareness helps you build better relationships. You can clearly talk about your feelings.
When you bring awareness to your emotion, power is brought to your life. Emotional intelligence enables you to respond and not react. Never permit your emotions to overpower your intelligence.
