The Five Stages of Conflict — Part 4.
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:19 (KJV).
The latent stage is where the participant in a conflict is in the dark. They are not aware there is a war exploding or one already existing. The perceived stage is when they realise and are aware there is a conflict. What you do at this stage matters. This is when you can kill and bury the conflict or continue to be complicated by feeding your ego. From the perceived stage, the next is the Felt Stage. The Felt Stage is the stage you start expressing stress and anxiety.
OK. You just perceived there is a conflict, so why the stress and anxiety? Why allow your emotions to boil to the point of vaporisation? The reaction of threat is inborn, and the sole purpose is to ensure our survival. The fundamental motivation behind the feelings of threat is to protect yourself from danger. All your emotions, including fear, frustration, and anger, are visceral and dramatic. Your mind and body are mobilised by the threat response with powerful physiological changes that would help you fight or flee. In this case, you are fighting instead of understanding the conflict, negotiating and resolving it. The threat becomes a negative influence.
Your body responds to stress in a way that can be both helpful or harmful. When the stress response is a result of a threat, then it could be detrimental. A threat to your life or to your protection triggers a primal physical response from your body, leaving you breathless, heart-pounding, and mind racing. A chemical signal speeds stress hormones through the bloodstream from deep within your brain, instructing your body to be on a red alert and ready to escape danger. The hormonal signals only switch off the stress when the stressful situation is over.
But in the case of having a conflict with someone else, the threat is right there in your face; the danger does not just cease. You must address it. How can you handle it if you have blocked your mind and continue to allow your assumptions to take the better of you?
Whatever you are experiencing right now, God is watching over you. God has promised He will never leave or forsake you.
