Jesus and Conflict — Part 7.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Philippians 2: 3-4 (KJV).
The most delicate and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched; they are felt in the heart. Often, we make the mistake of judging things, judging people through our imperfect sight, but when you look at them through your heart, you will see something significant, unique, and wonderful about them. Almost every pulpit will encourage you to be like Jesus, yet they do not teach you the anxiety, stress, hard work, pain, and sorrow he underwent to be what he is. He paid the price you are not willing to pay.
Jesus was able to overcome conflict in every aspect of his life because he was humble. He understood the power of humility. Matthew Chapter 18 opens with the disciples asking Jesus about who will be most significant in the Kingdom of Heaven. The answer of Jesus really surprised them. I presume they were also disappointed when he advised them to be humble like children.
Habitually, when people talk about this familiar passage, they proceed no further. Jesus said that if anyone causes a child to sin, it would be better for them to be drowned in the sea. So, what is Jesus saying?
Jesus is saying that humility is the first requirement of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is an essential requirement for living a Christian life! Many of your actions, choices and words will not only be offensive, but they can cause you to stumble in your relationship with God.
Pride comes before destruction and an arrogant spirit before a fall. Pride will always be the longest distance between two people. Do not allow your pride to deprive you of resolving that conflict. You know the one I mean. The one that is getting on your nerves, and you feel it is time to ruin the relationship. Pride will cost you everything but leave you with nothing. Unforgiveness chains you to the past, poison the present, and keeps you from what the Lord has for the future. When you have done something wrong, admit it and be sorry.
