Mental Illness. How Can I Help? — Part 3.
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.
1 Peter 3:8 (KJV).
The cause of mental illness, like many would like you to think, is not because you are weak. There are gigantic reasons why one will have a mental illness. The causes might not be the same for all. Truth be told, no doctor can tell you the root cause of mental illness. Although the precise cause of numerous mental illnesses is not identified, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
When you are helping or supporting someone with mental illness, you need to be conscious and understand your role and what you need to do. If you care for someone with a mental illness, you might find it stressful and difficult. It is essential to look after your own health and well-being. Do not neglect your health and well-being. Understand what you can and cannot do as a carer. Understand what the person you care for can and can’t do.
Give yourself time to do things you want to do, such as a hobby or leisure activity. Try and keep physically active and have a well-balanced diet. Keep an eye on your own health and know when you need a break. Join a carers or support group for peer support. You can also use an emotional support service if you are unable to get to meetings. If you feel low or stressed, talk to your doctor about this - perhaps talking therapy like counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), or other treatment will help you.
When you have a healthy attitude about your feelings and how to express them, you are better equipped to get through events well. Emotional overwhelm is a state of being beset by intense emotion that is difficult to manage. It can affect your ability to think and act rationally. Emotional overwhelm occurs when the intensity of your feelings outmatches your ability to manage them.
Emotional overwhelm can make it difficult to take care of yourself. You may forget meals, skip rest breaks, or struggle to fall asleep. These behaviours can in turn lower your ability to think rationally, making it even harder to cope with overwhelm.
