Stand Still and See — Part 3.
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
Exodus 14:13 KJV).
The Israelites finally left Egypt. They are on their way to the Promised Land. In the old days, Abraham was also on his way to the Promised Land, Canaan. Abraham spent much of his life wandering. From Haran, he went to Damascus in present-day Syria, and Dan (where he freed a captured nephew) and Shechem, and Jerusalem in Canaan (present-day Israel) before being driven by famine into Egypt in search of food. Abraham may have used donkeys as pack animals and travelled with them in a caravan. The Bible said he used camels, but they were not utilised as domesticated pack animals when Abraham most likely made his journey.
Here his descendants, left Canaan, the Promised Land, to Egypt because of famine. They are now on a journey to a land they abandoned. It was a moment of freedom. They are free. They can worship God in a way they seem fit without being censored. But this was not going to be the case. Their freedom will be short-lived. As the Israelites had left, Pharaoh changed his mind. He called his army and set off to pursue the Israelites on chariots. For the Israelites, it was a disaster. They have Pharoah and his armies behind them and the red sea in front. There is nowhere to run to or to hide.
The frightened Israelites shouted to Moses, "It would have been better if we stayed rather than die in the wilderness." They were angry with Moses. Moses had to speak to the people; he must calm them. He had to remind them of the mighty works of God in their lives. The first word from Moses is "Fear Not."
The universal trigger for fear is the threat of harm, real or imagined. This threat can be for our physical, emotional, or psychological well-being. Fear kills your ability to see beauty. Don't be afraid of your worries and fears. They're not there to scare you. They're there to let you know that something is worth it.
