Make Time for Your Highlight — Part 6.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Philippians 4:13 (KJV).
The Busy Bandwagon does a great job of convincing us all that “just one more thing” is the responsible and hardworking thing to do, and often it seems like the only way to keep from falling behind. But it isn’t. When you work until you are exhausted, you lose more time, and before you know it, you fall behind because you have succeeded in robbing yourself of the other task you need to prioritise and do your best work.
You are at this stage driving a car that has run out of gas. Your tank is completely empty; you are useless. No matter how long you put your foot on the accelerator pedal, you are static; you are wasting valuable time going nowhere because the tank is still empty. You really need to stop and refuel.
Have you ever experienced reading and feeling sleepy, but you refused to stop reading? An hour has gone by, and you found out you are still on the same line on the same page. You have been struggling in and out of sleep. You sit down as a big fool, convincing yourself you will overcome the sleep. You fell asleep, though, but you had no clue, and it was not the best of sleep because it was not conducive. You feel back and neck pain. You end up not reading and depriving yourself of sleep. You end up wasting all that time you fall in and out of sleep without gaining.
In my Mastermind Mentoring Class, I set the class to start 5 minutes later for a class that begins top of the hour. I ended the class 20 minutes before. The early closing creates a mental shift, and our students feel energised, and their productivity increases dramatically. Even shortening the section by thirty minutes made a big difference.
Instead of answering every email or finishing every task, you need to create your own finish line. You can find a perfect time of the day to stop, or you can use your highlight. As closing time approaches, think about whether you accomplished your highlight. If you have, you can rest knowing you made time for your MIT (Most Important Task).
