The Sure Word for Today

Communication that Connects.

Key Bible Verse:
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:12

The Affirmation
We speak with wisdom, patience, and love. Our words build connection, reduce anger, protect honour, and strengthen unity in our marriage daily.

Day 2: Listen First
Listening first is one of the strongest ways to build communication that connects. Many conflicts grow because both people want to be heard, but neither person slows down enough to understand. In marriage, listening is not silence while waiting to defend yourself. Listening is attention, humility, and respect. It tells your spouse, “Your heart matters to me.”

A soft answer becomes easier when you first listen well. If you do not listen, you will answer assumptions, not the real issue. You may respond to tone and miss the pain. You may react to one sentence and ignore the deeper need. Listening helps you hear what is beneath the words: fear, disappointment, pressure, loneliness, or a desire for support. Connection grows when understanding comes before correction.

Today, practise listening as an act of love. Do not interrupt. Do not rush to explain yourself. Do not prepare your defence while your spouse is speaking. Ask one clarifying question. Repeat what you heard before you respond. This simple discipline can reduce anger and increase trust. Listening first turns communication from a battle into a bridge.

Connect: Your Challenge and Response
You may listen only to reply, especially when you feel accused. Respond by slowing down today and listening to understand before giving your answer.

Extend: Faith in Action
In one conversation today, let your spouse finish completely. Then say, “What I hear you saying is...” before giving your response calmly.

Reflection and Application
Do I listen to understand or defend?
Where do I interrupt most often?
What emotion is beneath my spouse’s words?
What question can I ask before responding?
How can listening build trust today?

Inspirational Quote by Jefferson Otonbara Imgbi
“Listening first turns conflict into connection. When you seek to understand before you answer, your words become wiser and your marriage becomes safer.”

Let Us Pray
Father, teach us to listen with humility and love. Help us slow down, understand one another, and respond with wisdom. Remove defensiveness from our hearts and make our communication patient, respectful, and healing. Strengthen our unity through better listening. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
