Day 5: Pause Before Replying
A pause can save a conversation from becoming a conflict. In marriage, quick replies often come from emotion, not wisdom. When anger, hurt, or frustration rises, the first words that come to mind may not be the words that build connection. A soft answer requires space. That space gives your heart time to calm, your mind time to think, and your words time to become constructive.
Many arguments grow because one person reacts quickly and the other reacts back. The issue may be small, but the reaction becomes large. Pausing before replying breaks that cycle. It helps you ask better questions. It helps you hear the real concern. It helps you avoid sarcasm, accusation, and blame. A pause is not avoidance. A pause is self-control. It gives wisdom the opportunity to lead before anger takes over.
Today, practise the discipline of pausing. When your spouse says something that triggers you, do not rush to defend yourself. Breathe. Pray quietly. Ask yourself, “What response will build peace?” Then answer with patience and clarity. You may still need to address the issue, but you can address it without damaging the connection. A pause can turn a heated moment into a healing moment.
