Healthy Conflict Resolution| Part 5

The Sure Word Devotion
Day 5: Listen Before Defending
Listening before defending is one of the strongest signs of maturity in conflict. Many arguments continue because both people are preparing their defence instead of trying to understand the pain beneath the words. In marriage, your spouse does not only need you to hear sound. They need you to understand meaning, emotion, and concern.

Defensiveness blocks healing because it turns every concern into a courtroom. Instead of receiving feedback, the heart starts gathering evidence. Instead of asking, “What are you feeling?” pride asks, “How can I prove I am right?” Healthy conflict resolution requires humility. You can listen without agreeing with everything. You can receive your spouse’s feelings without surrendering truth. Listening gives love time to understand before it responds.

Today, practise listening with patience. Do not interrupt quickly. Do not correct every detail immediately. Do not explain yourself before your spouse finishes. Ask questions that bring clarity. Repeat what you heard so they know you are present. When your spouse feels heard, the conversation becomes safer. Love listens first because understanding is more important than winning.

Connect: Your Challenge and Response
You may defend yourself quickly when your spouse raises a concern. Respond by listening fully today and seeking understanding before explaining your position.

Extend: Faith in Action
During your next difficult conversation, pause before replying. Ask, “Can I understand what you mean?” Then repeat what you heard before giving your response.

Reflection and Application
Do I listen or prepare my defence?
What makes me feel attacked during conflict?
How can I show my spouse I understand?
What question can I ask before replying?
How can listening reduce tension in our marriage?

Inspirational Quote by Jefferson Otonbara Imgbi
“Defensiveness fights to be right, but listening fights for understanding. Mature love hears the heart before answering the words.”

Let Us Pray
Father, teach us to listen before defending ourselves. Remove pride, impatience, and fear from our hearts. Help us hear one another with humility, respond with wisdom, and resolve conflict through understanding, love, and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
