The Logician — Part 1.
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
John 8: 7 (KJV).
The mob got an answer they did not anticipate. Jesus did not rush to answering their question. Jesus took his time to analyse and think about it and applied wisdom. He used a sense of logic to defeat these men who were laying a trap for him. They accused a woman of adultery. The way the mind of Jesus works was incredible. The mind of Christ is far too precious to not cultivate.
In another story, a lawyer asked Jesus to define the greatest commandment. Jesus answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." The three functions of the mind — thoughts, feelings, and desires — can be guided or directed either by one's native egocentrism or by one's potential rationale.
Logic is a proper or reasonable way of thinking about or understanding something. Logic is a particular way of thinking, especially one that is reasonable and based on sound judgment. Jesus spent time thinking and analysing the motives of the men who brought a woman they claimed was caught committing adultery. They want her dead. The crime they sentenced her for had a man involved they decided not to convict. They were biased. Jesus knew they came with an ulterior motive.
Many believers will advise you not but rather allow the Holy Spirit to think for you. Hmm. I thought about this as I imagined the life of Jesus, how he is a deep thinker. I see Jesus think a lot and uses logic despite the presence of the Holy Spirit. I can choose my thoughts and think things on purpose. In other words, I don't have to just think about whatever falls into my mind. It is not a sin to be a logical thinker. "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 1:18).
'Reason' is the capacity to consciously make sense of things, apply logic, establish, verify facts, and change or justify practices, institutions, and beliefs based on new or existing information. God wants you to think, analyse, and apply logic. He wants you to make sense.
