The Sure Word for Today

Today, we are looking at Cultivating Spiritual Discernment. Discernment is crucial in Christian living as it helps you differentiate between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. Solomon, known for his wisdom, sought discernment from God to lead his people justly. In 1 Kings 3:9, he asked, "Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad." Like Solomon, you can seek God's wisdom to navigate life's complexities.

Practicing discernment through prayer and Scripture is essential. Philippians 1:9-10 emphasises this: "And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent." Regularly immerse yourself in God's Word and prayer, asking for the Holy Spirit's guidance. This practice strengthens your ability to discern God's will in every situation, enabling you to make wise and righteous decisions.

Daniel is another example of someone who practised discernment. In Daniel 1:8, he "purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat." His commitment to God's commands and regular prayer equipped him with the discernment needed to remain faithful in a foreign land. By following Daniel's example, you can cultivate a discerning heart, dedicated to God's truth and resistant to worldly pressures.

Extend

Consider Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God is.” Reflect on how you can renew your mind through Scripture and prayer to enhance your discernment.

Reflection And Application

Think about areas in your life where you need clearer discernment. Are there decisions or situations requiring God's wisdom? Ask God to guide your heart and mind, helping you discern His will and make choices that honour Him.

Let Us Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You seeking wisdom and discernment. Help me to understand Your will and make decisions that align with Your truth. Guide me through Your Word and the Holy Spirit, illuminating my path and protecting me from deception. Just as Solomon and Daniel sought and practised discernment, I ask for a heart and mind attuned to Your guidance. Strengthen my ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and lead me in Your righteousness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
