The Sure Word for Today

Shame is one of the most significant barriers to speaking openly about struggles, especially with mental health. In the Bible, the woman with the issue of blood hid in shame, suffering for 12 years in silence. It was not until she bravely reached out to touch the hem of Jesus' garment that she found healing. Like her, you may be trapped by shame, but God calls you to step forward, knowing that His grace is more significant than any fear or stigma.

Shame often makes you feel unworthy of love or help, but Jesus never turned away those who sought Him. Zacchaeus was a man burdened by shame because of his corrupt actions as a tax collector. But when he encountered Jesus, his life changed. Instead of hiding, Zacchaeus opened up, and his shame was replaced by restoration. You, too, can break free from shame by embracing the truth that God’s love and forgiveness are available for you, no matter your past.

Breaking the chains of shame is not easy, but God’s grace empowers you to do so. The apostle Paul once persecuted Christians, but after his encounter with Christ, he became a bold advocate for the faith. His story is a reminder that your past does not define you. When you surrender your shame to God, He turns it into a testimony of His transformative power, allowing you to walk in freedom.

I can relate to the fear of judgment that keeps many silent about their mental health struggles. But like the woman who reached out to Jesus, I realised that healing begins when I choose to be vulnerable despite the shame.

Hebrews 12:2 reminds us that Jesus "endured the cross, despising the shame." He faced shame so that you could be free from it. Let this truth encourage you to break free from the chains that hold you back.

Let Us Pray

Lord, I bring before You the shame and silence that have weighed me down. I ask for the courage to break free from the chains of shame and open up about my struggles. Teach me to trust that Your grace is sufficient and my weakness is the place where Your strength shines the brightest. Help me to remember that I am loved and accepted just as I am. As I release my shame, it fills me with peace and the confidence to walk in freedom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
