"The Abundance of the Free Favour of the Lord." Luke 4:18-19
Hi Visitor,
True listening goes deeper than the words spoken. Proverbs 20:5 says, “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.” People often communicate their pain, fear, or hopes indirectly. Hearing beyond the words means tuning into emotions, body language, and unspoken struggles hidden beneath surface conversations.
In conflict, someone may use sharp words, but underneath is often hurt or disappointment. If you only react to the words, you might miss the deeper need crying out for understanding and healing. When you listen for the heart behind the words, you become a source of comfort and a bridge to restoration rather than another barrier.
Today, focus on listening beyond the surface. Pay attention to tone, facial expressions, and pauses. Ask gentle questions to understand more deeply, such as, “What are you really feeling right now?” or “What is most important for me to understand?” This approach shifts conversations from arguments to moments of connection and growth.
Think about a time when someone noticed your pain even when you said you were “fine.” That understanding likely felt like a lifeline. Let that experience inspire you to listen deeply to others today.
Jesus saw beyond words. When the woman touched His garment, He knew her deeper need for healing and peace. When Nicodemus came by night, Jesus addressed the questions of his heart, not just his words. Learn to see and hear as He did.
Write down one relationship where you need to hear beyond the words spoken. Then write, “I choose to listen for the heart, not just the words.” Carry this mindset into your conversations today.
"Listening deeply means hearing the pain unspoken and the hopes hidden behind every word."
May God bless your heart with discernment to hear beyond words. May He help you recognise hidden hurts and respond with compassion and patience. Let your listening bring healing and draw hearts closer to understanding and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
