Day 6: Listening Without Defensiveness

Listening without defensiveness is one of the greatest signs of spiritual maturity and emotional strength. Proverbs 19:20 says, “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” In conflict, it is easy to become defensive, to justify actions, or to shift blame. But when you listen openly, even to hard truths, you show humility and create space for healing.

Defensiveness blocks understanding. It turns conversations into battles and shuts down opportunities for growth. When you listen without preparing your counter-argument, you allow yourself to truly hear the other person’s pain and perspective. This does not mean you agree with everything said, but it means you honour their feelings enough to hear them fully.

Today, choose to lay down your defences. When you feel the urge to interrupt or defend, pause and breathe. Focus on the heart of the message rather than your reaction. In doing so, you invite trust, promote peace, and strengthen your relationships.

Think about a time someone listened to your criticism or pain without arguing back. It probably felt safe and healing. Remember that power and offer it to someone today.

Extend

Jesus listened to questions and accusations without defensiveness. He answered with wisdom and calm strength, inviting deeper understanding rather than fueling conflict. Let His example guide you.

Reflection And Application

Write down one area where you feel most defensive when listening. Then write, “Today, I choose openness over defence.” Use this as a reminder to stay calm and receptive.

Inspirational Quote by Jefferson O Imgbi

"A defensive heart closes doors. An open heart builds bridges that conflict could never destroy."

Let Us Pray

May God bless your heart with humility and courage to listen without defence. May He help you receive hard words with grace and transform tension into deeper connection. Let your openness become a path to true healing and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
