"The Abundance of the Free Favour of the Lord." Luke 4:18-19
Hi Visitor,
One of the hardest things in conflict is to look beyond your pain. But growth begins when you stop defending yourself long enough to truly see the other person. Empathy requires that you shift your perspective. It is not about agreeing with their actions; it is about acknowledging their experience. When you take the time to understand someone else’s pain, you disarm the cycle of reaction and blame.
Consider the story of Stephen in Acts 7. As he was being stoned, he prayed, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” Even in the face of death, Stephen looked beyond his suffering and extended empathy to those killing him. That kind of love is not natural. It is spiritual strength in action. Empathy does not ignore truth; it applies grace to the truth.
Conflicts linger when everyone fights to be heard but no one stops to listen. When you choose to see past your anger or frustration, you make space for resolution. You demonstrate maturity and leadership in your relationships.
Think of a recent disagreement. Were you more focused on being right or on understanding the other person? Emotional maturity is shown not in how loud you defend yourself, but in how well you understand others.
Empathy is a decision. It is cultivated through humility, reflection, and a desire to grow. Challenge yourself to pause before reacting, and ask, “What might this person be feeling that I do not see?” This one question could change everything.
Write down the name of someone you have had tension with recently. Then write what you think they may have been feeling or fearing during the conflict. Use this exercise to prepare your heart for reconciliation.
“Understanding others does not require you to agree, it only requires that you care enough to listen without defence.”
Lord, give me the courage to pause, the wisdom to see beyond my emotions, and the grace to understand those I disagree with. Shape my heart to reflect your compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
